On the Plain of Snakes: A Mexican Journey by Paul Theroux
Theroux travels the length of the U.S. Mexico border crossing back and forth before heading south into the interior of the country to meet the people, taste the food, teach a class, and get a feel for what’s going on with our neighbors to the south.
Driving his own car with Massachusetts plates means he is visible as a tourist and an old gringo. He talks to anyone who will talk to him. Border Patrol officers, factory workers, and deported Mexicans all have a story to tell. What he finds is sometimes difficult; think drug cartels, poverty, and people without options. And often it is uplifting; food, friendship, a rich and layered history, and people who help each other. This is an important book for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of Mexico and its people.
In addition to non-fiction: The Old Patagonian Express and Deep South, Theroux has also written fiction including The Mosquito Coast.
Carol Lloyd is the Director of the Churchill County Library. Theroux is one of her favorite authors and is always interested in his observations.
