Book Review -- An American Memoir

Book Review -- An American Memoir
Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon Laymon details what it means to be black in America.   From being raised in Jackson, Mississippi we follow his path to college professor in New York. He doesn’t shy away from his difficult relationship with his brilliant mother, sexual violence, getting kicked out of college, gambling issues, and his ever present body image problem. He is brutally honest about himself and how he fits into the larger American narrative. And he wonders how we can ever come to terms with who we are as a nation when we are unwilling to look at where we’ve been. A moving and often heartbreaking account of one man’s journey. Kiese Laymon’s Heavy: An American Memoir is a 2019 Nevada Reads, a statewide book club, selection sponsored by the Nevada Humanities. He will be speaking on Saturday, September 14, at 12 p.m. at the Nevada Museum of Art as part of the Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl. This is a free ticketed event. This title is available at the library in print format and downloadable in print and audio through Overdrive/Libby at the library website. Carol Lloyd is the Director of the Churchill County Library.
