Bus Scharmann, current Churchill County Commissioner, former Superintendent for ChurchillCSD, and retired dean of Western Nevada College, had lunch the other day with the current president of Western Nevada College, Dr. Vincent Solis, to talk about the college in Fallon, and he received good news. According to Solis, the WNC Fallon campus enrollment is growing.
“Percentage-wise enrollment is up in Fallon,” said Scharmann, “while no other WNC campus is showing growth.” He said it will take some time to get numbers back up to where they were historically, but he also thinks this campus will continue to rebound.
The Fallon campus has suffered over the years through a combination of the economic downturn and policy decisions made by an earlier administration. For several years a group of concerned community members, the Restore our College Campus Committee, has been actively involved with WNC leadership to restore programs and classes.
Fallon Campus director Holly O’Toole has also been hard at work meeting with community leaders, has her staff doing outreach activities, and increasing the visibility of the college.
Fall classes begin on Monday, August 26th, and community education classes run continuously. Contact staff at the Fallon campus by calling 775-423-7565.
