Nevada Girls State Offers Leadership Experience for High School Juniors

High school junior girls in Nevada have the chance to step into the roles of government leaders at Nevada Girls State, a week-long program run by the American Legion Auxiliary. The program, held annually, allows participants to form a mock government, campaign for office, debate real issues, and pass laws, providing hands-on experience in civic leadership.

Open to high school juniors with an interest in government and leadership, Nevada Girls State offers a unique opportunity to gain public speaking skills, learn legislative processes, and hear from female leaders, including politicians and judges. The program also includes a field trip to the Nevada Legislature in Carson City, public speaking competitions, and patriotic ceremonies.

Attendees who are direct descendants of wartime U.S. military veterans can apply for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship, which provides college funding. Those who excel may also be selected to represent Nevada at ALA Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., where they can meet members of Congress and debate national issues.

The program fee is $300, with an additional $75 for transportation south of Silver Springs. Many schools and American Legion Auxiliary units offer sponsorships to help cover costs.
