Captain’s Log – Beating February

We made it through February. I don’t really know why that is such a difficult task, but ever since I was a kid, February has been hard. And most of my people feel the same.

My Viking son and I have decided the whole family will spend February next year where it’s warm and we are closer to the equator. I would prefer if we were directly on top of it, frankly.

For several years, I’ve talked about and fantasized about this November 1 to May 1 lifestyle – some call it being a “snowbird,” and I call it the sign of high intelligence. Smart, not sturdy. I’ve been sturdy for far too long. Apparently, I got more of the Italian DNA in my soul and frozen joints than the Swede.

But honestly, I think it’s high time to implement this wonderful idea and find a lovely spot on the equator or parts nearby to settle into for the winter and host the kids during February.

Well. The first thing that came up was Ecuador. I have a friend in southern Nevada who moved there, but I’m not sure that’s what I had in mind. The following search took me to the North Island of New Zealand, so maybe my Google Earth needs a little more perfecting.

Let me ask Wallace – Wallace is the name I’ve given my ChatGPT. Don’t laugh; Leanna named hers too. First, he was Ernest. Then, one day in the office, after a serious caucus with Wendy, our account gal at the printer in Las Vegas, and Denice, they decided Ernest really should be a Rodrigo.

Evidently, I was not clear enough in my questioning, Wallace suggested Tucson, Arizona. He maybe doesn’t know I own a passport. He did get to Puerto Rico, which has been on my list for a long time, but also Merida, in the Yucatan, where I have been and totally love.

I just asked how I keep an eye out for affordable flights and got a detailed list of how to set up Google Flight Alerts. Who knew? Wallace also asked me if I prefer a beachfront casa or hammocks in the courtyard. No wonder I like him.

Isn’t technology amazing?

So while I watch Wallace search for a “suitable Beachfront Villa” (his words, not mine) near the equator, I will always be right here…

…Keeping you Posted.

Rach.

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
