CCHS Students Join Sunday ACT Prep and NV Energy Line Crew Career Discussion

CCHS Students Join Sunday ACT Prep and NV Energy Line Crew Career Discussion
Story and photo by Dr. Sue Segura.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, the CCHS School to Careers classroom was buzzing with activity.

At 1 p.m., eight seniors met with Mr. and Mrs. Hellton. Mr. Hellton, who oversees the NV Energy line crew in Northern Nevada, provided an informative introduction to the work his team does. The Helltons’ knowledge and experience offered students valuable insight into careers in the energy industry.

At 2 p.m., 17 juniors arrived to take a practice ACT test. Research shows that practice tests are one of the best ways to improve scores. CCHS teachers have been tutoring students for the ACT since Jan. 8, hoping to better prepare them for the official junior class test on Feb. 25.

As the School to Careers coordinator, Dr. Sue Segura says her job is to provide up-to-date research and opportunities to help juniors succeed and attend the colleges of their choice. Many students plan to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, business, nursing, and other fields, all of which require strong ACT performance as part of their Career Pathway.
