Author Ben Mikaelsen Visits Sixth Grade
Acclaimed children’s book author Ben Mikaelsen visited Mr. Andrew Gilliland’s sixth-grade English class last week. Mikaelsen wrote the popular book “Touching Spirit Bear.”
During his visit, Mikaelsen read the book and discussed the creative process of creating the characters and bringing their stories to life with the students.
He also talked to the students about loving adventure and shared insights about his life experiences, emphasizing how he transformed challenges into compelling narratives.
His interactive presentation inspired the young audience to pursue their passions. It addressed critical issues such as bullying, reinforcing the message that every individual has the power to make a difference through their words and actions.
Senior Spotlight: Hailey Arends
From a bright-eyed second grader to an accomplished high school graduate, graduating Oasis Academy senior Hailey Arends’ journey has been marked by dedication, diverse interests, and academic excellence.
Arends is set to graduate in May with her high school diploma and two associate degrees - an Associate of Art and an Associate of Applied Science - along with an American Sign Language certification of achievement. The senior has truly made the most of her educational opportunities.
Beginning her college classes and building relationships have been her favorite memories during high school.
This includes Mr. Eric Grimes's college History class.
“Mr. Grimes’s history class was my favorite. He showed that he cared about the students and their opinions. He didn’t pick favorites,” she said.
She has also been active in co-curricular activities, including archery and FFA, and is an active student council member.
Arends’ advice for future students is based on experience in the college classroom.
"You can't turn things in late in most college classes, so don't procrastinate,” she said.
Upon graduation, Arends aims to pursue a master’s in journalism and a Ph.D. in forensic anthropology.
Buster’s Best Recognized
At the start of the school year, one of the goals for K-8 Principal Amanda Barbosa was to implement recognition for students who are going above and beyond. Students are reminded daily of the principles of the Bighorn HERD (honesty, empathy, respect, and determination).
Each quarter, one of these principles is the focus of the students. This past quarter, the focus was honesty.
The 108 students who consistently demonstrated honesty by being sincere and genuine throughout the semester were honored at the assembly on Wednesday, November 13. They received recognition by showing honesty in the classroom, on the playground, in the cafeteria, and throughout the school.
The assembly included messages from high school students Mathew Bird, Grace Laca, and Eli Jones about what the HERD principles mean to them as student-athletes.
“The assembly was a great way to celebrate not just the achievements of our students but their unwavering commitment to honesty,” said Barbosa. “It is honesty that builds trust, fosters community, and paves the way for a brighter future. I’m grateful for our high school students for taking the time to come and share their experiences with the students as well.”
