Friday night, a new era for the varsity Greenwave football team began. With Calvin Conners as the new head coach, a new turf field, and new uniforms, the future was looking bright and exciting. This new journey began with probably the toughest opponent they would face all year, the Reed Raiders. Unfortunately, it appeared that opening night jitters got the best of Greenwave. Quarterback Matt Bird's first pass attempt for the night was picked off and ran back for a quick touchdown. That, combined with a few other team turnovers, spotted the Raiders with 35 points in the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, Greenwave tightened up their play and minimized any more self-inflicted pain, allowing their opponents only a field goal for the rest of the game. The Greenwave never quit and fought the entire game. Their commitment to each other culminated with Rylan Clark running the ball in for a touchdown with just over two minutes left in the game. The final score of the game was 38-7 in favor of Reed.
The Greenwave's next game is another home game on Friday at 7 p.m. against the North Valleys Panthers.
