Living with Fire – Celebrating Smokey the Bear’s 80th birthday during Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month with two events to help you become more familiar with how to prevent and prepare for wildfires. Led by the UNR Extension’s Living with Fire program, the first session on May 3 at 1:30 p.m., will include activities geared toward getting ready for evacuation and making communities more wildfire ready. The second program on May 17 at 1:30 p.m. will focus on how wildfires spread and how to prepare homes to be safer during a wildfire. Programming geared toward upper elementary and middle school students. Come to one or both programs.
Senator Rosen’s office representative will be at the library on May 9 at 1 p.m. for “office hours.” Stop by and let the Senator’s staff know what’s on your mind.
Reading with Rover also takes place on May 9 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Children get to keep the books they read to the dogs. Reading aloud improves reading skills and confidence to a decidedly captive audience of great listeners.

Book discussion group for adults continues on May 23 at 6 p.m. in the library annex. This month’s topic is “Mental Health.” Bring your favorite read on this topic to discuss and share with others. Light refreshments served.
Elementary Book Club meets May 31 in the Library Annex at 3 p.m. for those in grades 3 through 5. Reserve your book to take home at: bit.ly/CCLElementaryBookClub.
The Summer Reading Program kicks off on June 1 at 10 a.m. with an event featuring police, construction and fire vehicles up close. The program runs through July 31.
Ongoing Programs
“1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” encourages youngsters to read age-appropriate books before entering school. Book titles are suggested and offered by library staff. Recognition given for every 100 books read on the way to 1,000. Sign-ups accepted at any time at: bit.ly/CCL1000BBK.
Spice club features a different fair-trade spice for the community to try. Smoked paprika is featured for May. Tag the library on social media with your favorite recipe using this spice.
Tuesdays
Knitting Club meets at 10 a.m. on May 7, 21 and 28 and welcomes both novice and advanced knitters. They are willing to offer advice, tips and encouragement on your project.
Virtual Reality drop-in sessions for those ages 10 through 17 take place from 3:15 to 5 p.m. All welcome to stop by and enjoy a variety of virtual reality experiences. A parental consent form is required.
Wednesdays
No story time on May 1 or 2. In-person children’s story time resumes on May 8 at 11 a.m. Each week’s story time will feature the same content. Children’s Librarian Miss J reads picture books to children and offers a craft to accompany most stories. Geared to children ages 3-5, but all kids are welcome to participate.
Open makerspace will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on May 8, 15, 22 and 29 for ages 10 through 17. We open up the library makerspace for 3D printing, video production, stop motion animation, and more. Learn and experiment with our tools and materials and make something amazing.
Bring the whole family to the library on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. to enjoy classic board games and new ones. Have a favorite you want to share? Bring it. Try a jigsaw puzzle if board games are not your thing.
Thursdays
Children’s story time is at 10 and 11 a.m. except for May 2. Knitting Club meets again at 3 p.m.
Fridays
STEAM sessions with VR at 1:30 p.m. on May 10, 24 and 31. Choose from science, technology, engineering, art and math activities that vary from week to week. Geared to kids ages 5 through 12, but all are welcome.

Library hours of operation are Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Sundays and major holidays.
