Senior Spotlight: Amanda Christopherson

Making a lemonade stand in middle school is graduating senior Amanda Christopherson’s favorite memory from her time at Oasis Academy.

“I had a lot of fun with my friends in that group and enjoyed entertaining the kids by selling lemonade to them. We had fun making our stand together and learning,” Christopherson said.

Christopherson started at Oasis Academy in seventh grade. She found Oasis completely different from her previous school experiences.

“My time at Oasis has definitely been different from any experience I've had with any other school I've been to. It's been pretty great, honestly,” she said.

Those differences included being challenged and receiving the support she needed.

“The education is at a higher degree, which was a big step for me, but it helped me learn a lot. Even from the beginning, the teachers were able to tell I struggled more than others, giving me the help I needed so I could pass my classes,” she said. “Oasis is definitely more caring when it comes to its teaching and students compared to any other school I've had.”

Within the caring and supportive environment she experienced, she has a teacher she’d like to thank.

“I've had plenty of great teachers at Oasis, but if there were one I'd like to thank, it'd be Mr. Eric Grimes,” Christopherson said.

Grimes’ classes were interactive and engaging.

“I may not have been social in his classes or with him in general, but he is the best when it comes to teaching. Mr. Grimes involved his students in his lesson and had open discussions with us, allowing us to talk about our own opinions and beliefs. He is also a kind and funny guy to just talk and listen to,” she explained.

Christopherson is a talented artist, and the dual enrollment watercolor class she took was her favorite.

“I would say my watercolor class was pretty fun. I had more fun experimenting with watercolor in this class than I normally did outside of school, and my teacher, Mrs. Jill Oglesbee, was great. She is a sweet and accepting teacher for anyone,” she said.

As she prepares to graduate in May with her high school diploma and associate of arts degree from Western Nevada College, Christopherson is still deciding on her future plans. She does have advice for future students, though.

When coming to Oasis, it's definitely a lot different than other schools you may have been to, but it's nothing to be scared or terrified of, it's something to be excited for. Even if you struggle in school, the teachers will all do their best to help you graduate. And talk to one of the counselors, if necessary, they listen,” she closed.

Future Fest on April 19

There are still a few tickets available for the 6th Annual Oasis Academy Future Fest, which will be held on April 19 at the Convention Center. Proceeds from this year’s dinner will go toward the much-aged playground.

The City of Fallon is this year’s Premier Sponsor. Other sponsors include Tedford Tire, CC Communications, S.S. Hert Trucking, Les Schwab, Western Nevada College, Hiskett and Sons, Oasis Online, Smart and Final, Fallon Glass, A&K Earth Movers, and Banner Churchill Hospital.

The dinner will include live and silent auctions as well as raffles. Donors and items include a basket of tools and whiskey from Miles Construction, a certificate from Tumbleweed Garbage Disposal, UNR items from Silver and Blue Outfitters, a vacation package from the Sahara Casino, a night stay at the Atlantis Resort, two tickets to Burning Man, gift certificates to Johnny’s in Reno, a hot air balloon ride from Pat Irwin, gift certificates to Winco Foods, jewelry from Michael and Sons, gift certificates from Outback Steakhouse, a signed hockey puck from the Las Vegas Nights, and much more.

“This year, we really want to focus on playground improvements. The current playground has done its time and needs to be revamped to accommodate the students,” said Rochelle Tisdale, Interim Chief Executive Officer. “We are so very thankful for the support of the community as we seek to constantly improve Oasis Academy.” (Pictured right: Daleyza Gutierrez Tellez and Buster.)
