Farm Bureau Annual Picnic

Churchill County Farm Bureau’s Summer Picnic was a resounding success for those hardy enough to attend after that good morning rain storm. Hopefully, there wasn’t any hay down. The Farm Bureau Picnic is a family affair held annually at Rambling River Ranch. It is an opportunity to visit with old friends, make new ones, and meet with some of our elected officials and those contemplating a run in the future.

It was still raining when most arrived, but the skies opened to sunshine just after door prizes were awarded and the line started for the sumptuous dinner.

Kadee Buckmaster, the President of the YF&R (Young Framers and Ranchers, ages 18 to 35), provided fun and games for the kids. Her plans were such a success one of the youngsters decided he was not leaving. In Farm Bureau, all members of a family are included.

The guests included Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony and his wife, who traveled the furthest from Las Vegas and expressed an interest in our county, from agriculture to Sand Mountain. Bevin Lister, President of the Nevada Farm Bureau Federation, and his wife and granddaughter attended from Pioche. They run a diversified farm along with their family in eastern Nevada counties.

The Vice President of NVFB, Darrell Pursel, and his wife Suzanne, who primarily grow alfalfa, raise Angus cattle and occasionally sell alfalfa hay for tea attended. The two men vying against each other for one of the U.S. Senate seats, Tony Grady and Sam Brown, also attended with their wives.

Attending state and county officials included James A. Settelmeyer, the Director of the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources; Greg Koenig, NV Assemblymen, who represents all of Churchill and Esmeralda counties and parts of Nye and Mineral; Ken Grey, NV Assemblyman who represents Douglas and part of Lyon counties; Lyon County

Commissioner Scott Keller; Myles Getto, Churchill County Commissioner; Former Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske returned to enjoy the camaraderie of the annual picnic; Mr. & Mrs. Don Gustafson braved the weather, as well. Don has served in both the state assembly and senate.

The youth from CCHS FFA and Oasis FFA students did an excellent job setting up during the picnic, cleaning up afterward, and running the welcome table.

The work done and planned to be done by our officials is appreciated. Meeting everyone in an informal setting is a great way to create and maintain open paths between public and private individuals. The CCFB thanks all who were in attendance.
