CCMS 6th grade students enjoying an Aces Game

CCHS

CCHS art students, Mia Decker and Isabel Razo, spent over three hours last Friday and six hours on Saturday painting a beautiful waving American flag backdrop for military pictures students and staff have brought in this month to be displayed in honor of Month of the Military Child. This backdrop is located at the front of the school on the cafeteria windows. Razo is a proud military child herself and was thrilled to take the time to help out. “I am forever grateful and humbled by our student's dedication to making CCHS such a great place to work and learn,” said the head of the Purple Star Committee Heather Benjamin.

Students in Courtney Aguilera’s and Michelle Tapia’s classes attended the Reno Aces educational day last Thursday. Students participated in educational activities, watched the Aces play, and had lunch in the stadium. Students had to meet specific qualifications to attend. Qualifications included meeting school-wide expectations, following the CCMS behavior thermometer, and completing all their work the semester. Aguilera felt strongly about making this happen for her students. This is her third year of teaching, and she has never had an opportunity to take her students on a field trip because of covid restrictions. “This year I really wanted to experience a field trip, to see my students make memories outside the classroom, and to learn outside of the classroom. I also wanted to reward my students for all the hard work they completed in their first year of middle school. It was the best time, and my students had a blast. I cannot wait to continue implementing these fun out-of-the-classroom learning experiences for my students,” said Aguilera. Tapia had a great experience as well and said the Aces game brought out a lot of positivity and community building with the 6th-grade students. “They really helped each other get through the educational activities, hung out with different kids, and had a blast,” said Tapia.

Numa

On Friday, students dressed up in purple, the official color of the Military Child, in honor of the Month of the Military Child. It was also Numa’s third quarter activity day. “We had some military personnel come help lead a military physical training session with Kevin and Tara as one of our activity choices, and another choice was writing cards and letters to deployed military families,” said school counselor Noreen Swenson. Students from military families were also encouraged to invite one family member to join them in their chosen activity that morning. “It was such a fun morning and I really enjoyed having a few of my student's parents and family members present as well - it made it even more special,” said teacher Vanessa Burch-Urquhart.

Students and staff wore purple on Friday in honor of the Month of the Military Child. In addition, ECB’s Difference Maker Assembly was focused on Military-Connected students. “We were able to honor our military-connected students and present them with a certificate. It was a really incredible experience and we loved having the opportunity to recognize them in front of their peers,” said Principal Keith Boone.

Students in Stacy Mannings' class started their insect unit in Science last week. “I really focused on teaching the students about how some animals inherit traits from their parents by looking at different insects and their parents,” said Manning. Students were then asked to write a story about if they were an ant, what kind of ant would they be, a worker, male, or queen. They had to include facts they learned about ants such as their life cycle, body parts, habitat, jobs, and food. Then they illustrated pictures to match their stories and made 3D ants using red or black puffballs, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. “This is just the beginning of this unit, and my students are already loving it. However, I think they are the most excited about getting to watch our caterpillars in their butterfly habitat that we'll get next week,” said Manning.
