On Tuesday, November 15 the Fallon City Council approved the purchase of 2.2. acres located at 900 Lovelock Highway. The parcel will be used to provide road access to over 191 ranchland acres known as Serpa Ranch, a collection of parcels annexed by the city in 1982. As part of the city's plan for the future development of the ranchlands two easements were also granted for roadway access, one from Lovelock Highway and one from Austin Highway at Harrigan Road.

According to the Request for Council Action submitted by Chief of Staff Bob Erickson, this purchase will implement a part of the ranchland development plan by providing roadway access from Lovelock Highway. The parcel has just over 136 feet of road frontage, is more than 767 feet deep, and its western edge runs up to the city-annexed lands.

The 2.2-acre parcel is located in Churchill County just outside of the city limits on the east side of Lovelock Highway, south of and parallel to the S-Line irrigation canal. It was appraised by Reno-based Johnson Perkins Griffin, real estate appraisers and consultants, for $180,000. City officials reviewed and approved the appraisal along with the other documentation necessary to complete the purchase from Mark and Linda Hammond before recommending approval by the City Council.

After presenting his report, Erickson told the council, “This is a long-term plan, Mr. Mayor that is essential to the city’s development.” Councilwoman Karla Kent asked if the city had the property necessary for roadway access from Austin Highway to which Erickson replied, “Yes, we have the property in place for access from Highway 50 up to the northern boundary of Serpa Ranch. There is one exception to that, and that is where the former railroad used to be.” Councilwoman Kelly Frost also added, “Mr. Mayor, I just want to thank you and the city staff for your forward-thinking, and for putting together a plan for this development and its access points which will reduce traffic through the center of town.” With that, she made the motion to approve the property purchase from the Hammonds, Kent seconded the motion, and all voted in favor.

The Fallon City Council meets at 9 a.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the City Council Chambers in City Hall.
