The Churchill County School District Board of Trustees attended the Nevada Association of School Boards last weekend at Lake Tahoe. They attended two days of training focusing on roles and responsibilities, and innovative opportunities for learning, with a focus on building a network of school boards across the state.

Kathryn Whitaker, the outgoing president, was awarded the 2022 Individual Board Member of the Year and Superintendent Dr. Summer Stephens was honored for receiving her Certified Public Officials certification.

During the school board meeting Wednesday night, Board President Tricia Strasdin congratulated Whitaker on the work she did at the conference and for the association over the past year. “There was a lot that was unforeseen that required some excellent leadership and we were really excited that we had someone like Kathryn at the helm.”

Strasdin also said she enjoyed the conference and was able to attend a workshop regarding teacher recruitment and retention that was very useful. “I was excited to see our homepage tonight because according to that meeting millennials who are applying for jobs and going into education…two things that rank well above any kind of job fair, a homepage for that employer and it better work on their mobile phone, and so I appreciate the fact on our homepage right now there is a reference to mental health because culture is the other issue that ranks very high.”

Whitaker said the conference went well and thanked the board for their support during the year so she could represent the State of Nevada in meetings. “I hope you recognize that it provided an influence for Churchill County that we wouldn’t have otherwise have and it made a difference most definitely for our school district.”
