Wow. I have been on quite the twisty adventure with this one. If you think the cover is stunning, just wait until you sink your teeth into the meat of this story.
Kaikeyi is a beautiful retelling of the epic Sanskrit poem of the Ramayana, the story of Prince Rama. Kaikeyi is told from the point of view of a supposed villain - the interesting part is that you will never think of Kaikeyi as a villain at any point in this book. She is a strong, multi-faceted mother - a true feminist - who falls into the trappings of trying to make impossible decisions for her own children as well as the people of her two kingdoms.
I switched between reading and listening for this one - I highly recommend the audiobook. There is something extra special about hearing it read aloud by @soneela
Retellings of older stories are really hot right now and aren't always my favorite, but this one is special. In fact, I dove right in with no prior knowledge of the Ramayana - it really does stand on its own. @vaishnawrites - Thank you for such a colorful and heart-wrenching story - this was a little bit outside of my wheelhouse genre-wise, but I will never forget Kaikeyi and her rebel girl spirit.
