McNabb Qualifies for FFA Nationals

Oasis Academy College Prep junior Hunter McNabb was recently announced as a National FFA Finalist in the Agriscience Fair, Social Science category. McNabb was one of the elite top ten students in the nation to qualify in his division of Social Science. He is the only National Finalist in Agriscience Fair from Nevada.

McNabb will travel and compete at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis held Oct. 26-29, 2022. His project is titled The Role of Agriculture in Future Occupational Preferences in Students. To gain data, McNabb surveyed fellow Oasis high school students asking about their agricultural interests and backgrounds including familial history in agriculture.

“The results from the survey were very enlightening. They highlighted concerns for both the environment and animal welfare regardless of the student’s previous agricultural experience and exposure,” said McNabb.

McNabb’s project earned a gold ranking at the Nevada State FFA Convention this fall. A committee of high school teachers and college professors then nationally judged it.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to interact with peers with similar interests. I appreciate all the support that I have received from the school. I’m honored to represent Oasis Academy, Fallon, and Nevada at the national level,” continued McNabb.

“We are so proud of Hunter and all his hard work. We are excited for him to go to Nationals and present. He truly deserves this opportunity,” said Chief Academic Officer and Principal Rochelle Tisdale of McNabb’s accomplishment.

Nationally FFA has more than 735,000 members with local chapters in all fifty states as well as Puerto Rico and The U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dual Enrollment Classes Start August 29

While regular high school classes begin on August 22, Western Nevada College dual-enrollment classes will quickly follow for Oasis Academy College Prep students. WNC courses for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will begin on Monday, August 29.

This will be the third year that the Jump Start program has expanded to include freshmen and sophomores.

The variety of classes for students to choose from also continues to expand, by offering both academic and career training opportunities. Along with math, sciences, and English, students can select dual enrollment classes in art, business, welding, manufacturing, health, automotive, and more. Both traditional in-person and online classes are available.

“The partnership between Western Nevada College and Oasis Academy continues to provide access to college-level coursework for high school students in all grades,” said WNC President Dr. Kyle Dalpe. “Students can take classes that fulfill core degree requirements like English and math and classes in career and technical education to explore and prepare for workforce jobs.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for an underserved community to have access to college at such an early age and with a ton of support. WNC has been an excellent partner,” added Oasis Chief Academic Officer and Principal Rochelle Tisdale.
