During the Churchill County School District Board meeting held Wednesday, July 20, trustees approved the hiring of four new classified employees. The new human resources director, Annette Cooper, reported that she held a job fair on Tuesday and met with ten new applicants however none were teachers. She said that over the last two weeks two teachers have resigned from the district because they cannot find housing.
Currently, there are multiple open positions in the district. At CCHS there are vacancies for three math teachers, one science teacher, one English Language Learner position, and the Career and Technical Education positions of construction and welding, ag education, and the video production multimedia communication position. At CCMS there are two English openings and one math. Lahontan Elementary needs three kindergarten teachers and three paraprofessionals. There are also six bus driver positions open.
Trustees approved implementing all efforts to fill positions through other means and designate vacant teaching and classified positions, English teachers, and Instructional Assistants.
“Superintendent Stephens and I are meeting weekly trying to come up with creative ideas,” said Cooper. “We are open to ideas.”
Trustee Kathryn Whitaker reported that the Nevada Association of School Boards has hired Rick Harris as their new Executive Director. He started his education career as a teacher and coach in Pershing County. A native Nevadan he also worked in Washoe County as a teacher and administrator and developed the Principal’s Academy over a decade ago. Harris is coming to Fallon this week to meet with Whitaker.
She also said there are already Bill Draft Requests coming out and NASB continues to be involved in prospective legislation for the upcoming Legislative Session.
Board President Tricia Strasdin said she wanted the community to know during the beginning of August, “There will be a tabletop exercise where we will work with a system along with many community partners on our communication plan within our emergency response plan and the process will help us ensure we continue to be prepared for any emergency situation.”
Kristi Fielding, the Comptroller, reported on the Debt Management Policy. The district has $24,175,000 of general obligation bonds outstanding and $209,300 in medium-term general obligation bonds outstanding. The general obligation debt is paid from property taxes.
