As the local community gears up for one of the busiest weekends of the year, elected officials from cities and municipalities across the state find haven in Fallon this week for the Nevada League of Cities annual retreat, giving the Fallon and Churchill County community a perfect opportunity to show off.
Jo Walker is the administrative manager for the League who attended the State Department of Tourism Rural Roundup conference that was hosted by the City of Fallon in 2019. “We are really looking forward to being in Fallon, Mayor Tedford is a wonderful host.”
Jane Moon, the director of tourism for the City of Fallon hosted the Rural Roundup and is involved in planning for this retreat. She said the city enjoys providing a memorable time for all visitors and this is another opportunity to do that with leaders from across the state.
Nearly 50 members of the League kicked off their event Wednesday night at the Rafter 3C for a welcome reception and Show ‘n’ Shine. Thursday at the Oats Park Art Center, the group heard from national caliber motivational speaker Dave Mitchell who led the group through his process, The Power of Understanding People.
Walker said Mitchell is a great speaker and the presentation was interactive, taking attendees through a process that will help them become better communicators at work and home. “This retreat gives us an opportunity to interact with each other in a low-key environment, a chance for our leadership to get to know each other better.”
On Thursday afternoon, after a box lunch served in the Lariat Courtyard, attendees had the opportunity to tour the Top Gun Raceway and drive drag cars, ride side-by-sides at Sand Mountain, go trap shooting at the Trap Club on Rattlesnake Hill, and take a historic walking tour of downtown. Thursday evening, they attended a reception at Frey Ranch Distillery before dinner at the Lariat.
Mayor Tedford was excited as the City Council and staff prepared for the retreat, explaining each activity and the logistics of transporting attendees to the various locations. “This is how they should remember Fallon,” he said.
The city used all local restaurants and businesses to provide meals and activities, which provides the business community a chance to show off as well and benefit financially from the influx of guests.
The Nevada League of Cities is made up of representatives from 19 Nevada city members. Director Wesley Harper works with the Nevada Legislature during the legislative session and year-round during the interim on issues that affect cities.
“They are in the meetings where state agencies and legislators are talking about cities,” said Tedford. “They gather information and make us aware of what is happening at the state level, they are valuable.”
