The birds are in and are amazing to watch in any one of the Lahontan Valley Wetland areas. On Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, the Annual Spring Wings Bird Festival will take flight from its Festival Central at Oats Park in Fallon, should one be so inclined to fly that way.
According to the Spring Wings Bird Festival website, attendees can check-in, speak with local experts, acquire festival information, maps, bird lists, and get the scoop on the weekend's Bird Scavenger Hunt and Big Day Birding contests. Kids 12 and under can get a passport that when completed, will get them a free airboat ride during the festival weekend.
Attendees can take self-guided tours in any of five wetland locations: Lahontan State Recreation Area, Carson Lake and Pasture, Naval Air Station Wetlands Nature Trail, Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribal Wetlands, and the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge.
The Big Day Birding Competition requires that one find as many different birds as possible on that weekend. The winning entry will contain the highest number of species found and will earn a place on the first-ever Spring Wings Big Day Birding Contest trophy's nameplate. The Bird Scavenger Hunt requires that one find specific birds in the Lahontan Valley from a list to be provided to them, with completed entries being entered into a prize drawing. The contest results for both events must be turned in by 11 a.m., Sunday, May 1 at Festival Central.
Bird Festival passports will provide a learning opportunity for children as they explore each birding location. The entrance fee at Lahontan State Recreation Area will be waived for any kids with their passports. By going to the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge last with a completed passport, the child accompanied by one parent or guardian will get a free ride on an airboat, which will conclude at the end of the festival weekend.
