Second Day of Filing Brings Two More Candidates

Second Day of Filing Brings Two More Candidates

Two more candidates filed with the County Clerk on Tuesday, and there are one candidate each in the Assembly and Senate seats for the Nevada Legislature.

Kelly Frost filed Monday morning for re-election to her City Council Ward I seat. Due to changes at the legislature, for the first time, the municipal election will be held in November along with election for every other office. See the story here: https://www.thefallonpost.org/news/4374,municipal-elections-move-to-november

At the county, several candidates filed for re-election including Denise Mondhink-Felton for Assessor, Linda Rothery for Clerk/Teasurer, Arthur Mallory for District Attorney, Tasha Hessey for Recorder, and Richard Hickox for Sheriff.

Sheriff Hickox is being challenged by Daniel Ray Sharp.

On Tuesday, Bob Getto filed for reelection as Public Administrator.

Pete Olsen is termed out of his County Commission seat in District III, leaving an empty seat that both Tom Riggins and Myles Getto have filed to fill.

The School Board of Trustees race looks to be interesting with Amber Getto filing for re-election and newcomers Julie Guerrero-Goetsch, Joe McFadden, and Bill Post all filing. There are four seats open in that race. Tuesday they were joined in the race by Walter Henderson.

School board candidates run at large in a non-partisan race, with the four candidates who receive the most votes winning the four open seats. If only four candidates file, their names will be placed on the Primary Election ballot and they will be elected at that election. If more than twice (more than eight) file, they will go to the primary and get narrowed down to eight candidates. If five, six, or seven candidates file they will go straight to the General Election with no primary.

Churchill County Commissioner Greg Koenig has filed to run for the Assembly District 38 seat that Robin Titus is vacating to run for the State Senate District 17 seat. James Settelmeyer currently holds that seat, but is term-limited out. Although other candidates have previously announced intentions to run for those offices, nobody else had yet filed as of the close of business on Tuesday.

Churchill County voter registration reflects the make-up of most rural Nevada counties with a total of 12,166 registered voters in a community of 24,909. After several election law changes since the 2020 election, that number is down from 2020 when there were 14,707 registered voters. “The Fallon Post” will explore that issue in an upcoming story. There are 3,183 Democrats and 6,774 Republicans, along with 1,512 non-partisans and 697 from the other smaller parties.

Filing remains open until 5 p.m. March 18.

Churchill County is down 2,500 voters in 2 years? Wow. That should be a very interesting story. Thanks for keeping us posted, Rachel.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Lol -- great minds, we were super curious and have it on the list for next week. Much of that will have been the list clean-up after the new legislation was passed, but we will research and report. Thanks, Carl.
