After nearly a year and a half, Joel Matthew Hammeke appeared for sentencing in the Tenth Judicial District Court before Judge Thomas Stockard last week.
Hammeke was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Substantial Bodily Harm, a Category B Felony punishable by 1-15 years in prison. Represented by Jesse Kalter, Esq., Hammeke pled guilty to the charge on April 27, 2021, and has been awaiting sentencing.
According to the criminal complaint, on August 29, 2020, at 1197 Sky Ridge Road, Hammeke willfully used force or violence upon another person causing substantial bodily harm when he shot James Nigg in the chest. At the time of filing, 26 names were listed as witnesses in the case.
According to the terms of his plea agreement, Judge Stockard ordered Hammeke to pay restitution to James Nigg of $73,849.97 (at a rate of $2,200 per month). He was sentenced to a term of 45-120 months in a Nevada State Prison, with parole possible after 48 months. Stockard suspended the sentence and placed Hammeke on probation for a term not to exceed five years. He must also obtain substance abuse and mental health evaluations within 45 days of the Judgement of Conviction dated December 23, 2021. Hammeke, a veteran of the U.S. Military, was also to work with Parole & Probation to connect with Veterans Affairs for resources and to follow all applicable recommendations.
Further conditions of Hammeke’s probation prohibit the use of any alcohol or controlled substances and any contact with James Nigg, the victim, and the Goss family.
