Great Things Happening at the Museum

Great Things Happening at the Museum
by Leanna Lehman -- The Churchill County Museum has on display a new exhibit showcasing the photographs of Joyce Alcorn, (Joyce McCarthy Alcorn McClelland) a reporter for the Fallon Eagle Standard in the 1980’s. According to Marilyn Goble, one of the museum’s curators, Alcorn’s collection of photographs was unparalleled in volume. Thanks to the work of museum volunteers in 2017, her collection of 35mm negatives were cataloged and then scanned into digital files making this exhibit possible. The Joyce Alcorn exhibit includes numerous pictures of Fallon residents from that period, several yet unidentified. The museum invites the community to help identify the people in the photographs. Parades, school, community, and livestock events give a unique glance into the heart of Fallon during that era. The museum is also having a caption contest for several of Alcorn’s photos. The best caption will become a new museum postcard, and the social media hashtag #CaptionThis will be used to promote the photos. In addition to the Alcorn exhibit, the 2019 Museum Spring Lecture Series, Nevada Unearthed: Fossils, began Tuesday, March 19th and will continue through April 9th. The four-part series includes Animals who called Nevada home in the Mesozoic Era presented by former Fallonite Dr. Joshua Bonde, Curator of Paleontology of the Las Vegas Natural History Museum on March 19th. This Tuesday, March 26th, Jeff Morris, Park Supervisor of the Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park in Gabbs presents “Triassic Giants”, with the history of Shonisaurus popularis – one of the largest species discoveries of Ichthyosaur. On April 2nd, Brian Switek, Science Writer, and Author, will speak on “Written in Stone: How Paleontology Changed Our View of Nature.” On April 9th, Eric Cachinero, Associate Editor of Nevada Magazine, will wrap up the series and discuss his 6-part article series on ancient Nevada where faults and fossils were left for us to find. With great expectation, the meseum hosts the annual luncheon this Saturday, March 30th with the theme this year being “Bustles, Broads, and Pantaloonatics." Board member, Jennie Mader, will present an illustrated lecture on the women’s suffrage movement in Nevada. Tickets are $35 for the luncheon and a raffle and silent auction will be held to help fund the museum and its programs.   Support local, independent news – contribute to The Fallon Post, your non-profit (501c3) online news source for all things Fallon.
