Ask the Owl – Do we have the Delta Variant?

We get a lot of questions at the paper – from who to contact for various issues to “when is my brother going to court” you name it we’ve been asked it. We thought it might be fun to answer some of these for everyone since many of the questions feel like if one person is asking probably ten more are wondering as well. Make sure if you have a question about something going on in the community that you email us at [email protected] or call the office and talk to Ginny at 423-4545.

Here’s the query for this week – Is there any way you can find out if the Delta Variant has been identified in Churchill? Since our number of cases is on the rise it would be good to know. Thanks, I figure if anyone can get the information it would be you.  --Penny

According to the health staff at Churchill County Social Services, and relayed through Shannon Ernst, Director of Social Services, COVID cases are on the rise across the state.

“For Churchill County specifically,” said Ernst, “we’re seeing an average of about 2-5 daily new cases, when about a month ago, some days we had zero.” This still isn’t nearly as bad as it was from November 2020 to January 2021. In December 2020, the state saw up to 2,760 cases per day, and now the state is at 512 new cases per day.

Currently, there have been six confirmed delta variant COVID-19 cases in Churchill County. “Everyone is recovering well, though, so there is not an increased concern about this variant; especially if you are vaccinated,” said Ernst.

Churchill County encourages every eligible person to get vaccinated to lower their risk of infection.

Still better be careful in Fallon because the transmission rate in Elko is higher than Vegas- and a lot of people go between Fallon and Elko. Elko City Councilman Bill Hance just died from Covid-19.
