At the Churchill County Commission meeting Thursday, commissioners approved the purchase and erection of the ShadeScape Pavilion under a contract with Western Timber Frame, to be built at the Churchill County Civic Center and saw the renderings of the Rafter C3 building, as it has come to be called, to be built at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.
The project is considered to be an emergency project under COVID funding, as a facility to be used in case of a public emergency said Ben Shawcroft, assistant district attorney.
Additionally, according to County Manager Jim Barbee, in addition to being used as a community emergency response facility, the structure will be used for special events and as a tool to drive attraction of economic activity to the community.
In additional business, commissioners heard an update from Barbee regarding the county response to COVID. “We continue to offer unlimited access for folks to come get vaccinated at the vaccination POD.” He said the staff has been downsized at the Point of Delivery because there has been a significant decrease in those who are interested in receiving the vaccine. He said activities continue to move toward the June 1 date, “by which the Governor is removing all requirements around COVID, excluding the mask and we haven’t heard anything different along the lines of the mask which will continue past June 1.”
Caleb Cage, who has led the COVID response for the state will be transitioning back to his original position at the Nevada System of Higher Education, and Barbee asked if commissioners would like to keep the COVID response as a regular on the agenda.
Commissioners agreed it was no longer necessary and Barbee can make a report during his staff report if necessary.
Peggy Hughes and Gary Cordes were reappointed to serve three-year terms on the Churchill County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife.
Ava Case, Gary Imelli, and Bob Franke were reappointed to serve on the Park and Recreation Commission, and Alan Kalt was appointed as an At-Large member to the Audit Committee, filling the term previously held by Phyllys Dowd.
Commissioners were notified that a nuisance complaint has been filed by Thomas Keyes against Sage Hill Dairy. Chairman Pete Olsen recused himself from the agenda item, and commissioners Greg Koenig and Justin Heath set a hearing for the complaint on May 19.
Originally, commissioners had scheduled to address the Birch Lane zoning change issue, however the developer, Kim McCreary has pulled the application. Barbee explained that the process is such that if the developer decides to move forward with his project, “that process would start over and begin again through the Planning Commission.”
Commissioners did open public comment to a large number of community members who attended to oppose the development.
The next meeting of the commission will be held May 19, at 1:15 p.m.
