Book Review -- The Liar’s Dictionary: A Novel by Eley Williams

Book Review -- The Liar’s Dictionary: A Novel by Eley Williams

Peter Winceworth is a Victorian lexicographer hard at work on Swansby's multivolume Encyclopaedic Dictionary. He’s not particularly happy with his job so he inserts fake words, know as mountweasels, just fun of it and because he can.

Fast forward to the 21st century where Mallory,  is tasked with locating these words before the dictionary is digitized. The superb writing and wordplay make this book a delight. I wanted to continually look up words to see if they were real or not but was too engrossed in the storyline to stop for a dictionary check. This is one I’ll need to read again.

Carol is the Director of the Churchill County Library. She thought she had a fairly good vocabulary until she read this book. She was wrong.  This book made learning that very entertaining and maybe a bit humbling.
