This movie came out last year, just after everyone was trapped inside, and I am sorry I waited until now to see it. Saturday Night Live’s youngest cast member, Pete Davidson, wrote and starred in a semi-autobiographical movie directed by the well-known Judd Apatow. The movie follows Pete with his struggles to find his place in life in his hometown of Staten Island, New York. As a person in his young twenties, struggling with his mental health, Davidson tries to navigate life without his father. Tensions also arise in his life when his mother, played by Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Spiderman Homecoming) begins to date again.
Davidson uses his comedy and life experience to represent an issue we do not usually see in film, which is a character struggling mentally on his own. This movie has a rare point of view of someone who is extremely close to the story – being that it’s his own life – but is still able to give a bird's eye view of a character’s arch.
While I used to not see the popularity of Pete Davidson, this movie allowed me to give him more respect for his talent and craft.
