Almost a full year has elapsed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most Americans believed that within a few months, the worst would have passed. Unfortunately, that has not been the case.
By no means, has Nevada been set apart from the havoc created by the virus. The Silver State has just entered into another 30 days of mandates and restrictions set forth by Governor Sisolak. In his announcement on Monday, January 11th, the governor stated the hospitals throughout the state are at or above capacity and test positivity rates are on the rise. In response, he has extended Nevada’s statewide pause for another month. All mandates and restrictions for businesses are to remain in place. Additionally, health officials remain concerned over a potential spike in cases resulting from last month's holiday gatherings.
Nevada Department of Health and Human Services reported on January 12th that the cumulative number of positive cases in Nevada reached 253,985. Additionally, COVID related deaths are up from 3,295 last week to 3,569. The overall test positivity rate has increased slightly over the last week, following a three-week decline. The positivity rate is currently at 21.5%. Despite the increase in positive cases, the total number of individuals hospitalize statewide dropped from 1,739 last week to 1,429.
In Churchill County, the number of active positive cases rose sharply from 165 on January 4th to 304 on the 13th – the highest number of positive cases seen in the County. Local hospitalizations also decreased, following the statewide trend, and are down from 11 to 9 this week. A total of 18,328 tests have been administered since March.
