Concerns and questions continue to arise throughout the community as COVID continues to surge. Both Nevada and Churchill County officials released information this week providing details on how and when vaccines are being administered.
On the State level, Governor Steve Sisolak referred to the State's third version of the Nevada Playbook for vaccines along with updated information on the vaccine’s distribution structure. According to Sisolak and the Department of Health and Human Services, the revised Playbook aligns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, accounts for Nevada’s mortality data, and includes the prioritization for people 70 years and older with frontline essential workers. There is also updated information regarding people ages 65-69 years, individuals with disabilities, people with underlying health conditions, and other essential workers.
In his press release, Sisolak stated, “We all share the common goal of getting Nevadans access to the vaccine as quickly as possible in an equitable way. We are focused on a science and policy-based distribution model and the updates to the COVID-19 Vaccination Playbook ensure we continue on the best path for Nevadans.”
Locally, Churchill County officials issued a press release on Monday, January 11th, stating that vaccinations for Churchill County School District (CCSD) employees were scheduled to begin on Thursday at the testing site at the fairgrounds. School district personnel are among the Tier II individuals listed in Governor Sisolak’s Vaccination Playbook.
According to Summer Stephens, the District has begun preparing for staff vaccinations. They asked employees to inform themselves about the vaccine while the District worked on creating a vaccination prioritization process. “The District worked with the County to prepare for the rollout to work in conjunction with their available supply,” stated Stephens. “Just this week, we are moving forward with the vaccination of our employees who signed up for the vaccination as well as our District substitutes, followed next week by some that did not get in this week.” In mid-February, employees will receive the second dose of the vaccine. Summer also stated that CCSD is grateful for the collaboration with the County to roll this out so quickly and efficiently.
County officials are also planning to move forward to those over age 70 on Thursday, January 21st, also at the fairgrounds. Vaccines will be administered to the first 400 Churchill County residents aged 70 and older, on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Beginning at 4 p.m., residents will drive up to receive vaccines and must present a photo ID verifying age and residency within the County. For those 70 and older that cannot receive their vaccination on the 21st, or prefer to schedule an appointment, please call Banner Churchill Community Hospital Clinic weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by calling (775)-867-7740.
According to the press release, the County hopes local pharmacies will soon be able to assist in the administration of the vaccine. They also request that the public avoids using the section of Sheckler Road in front of the fairgrounds, on Jan 14th and 21st to limit traffic congestion on those days. Additional vaccine dates and information on Tiers will be provided when available.
