A View from the Street: Locals Comment on "Storming of Capitol"

A View from the Street: Locals Comment on "Storming of Capitol"

Wednesday marked an unprecedented day in the history of the United States of America, albeit not a good one. What began as a planned “Stop the Steal” rally on Wednesday, January 6th by President Donald Trump supporters to protest Joe Biden’s official electoral college victory, ended in disaster. By day’s end, the U.S. Capitol was stormed and subsequently locked down. Forty-five arrests were made, and two pipe bombs were discovered outside of the Democrat and Republican Committees. Additionally, a long-gun and a Molotov cocktail were recovered from the surrounding areas and four deaths were reported, including a woman who was shot by Capitol Police.

Protests also took place in several states, including Nevada, in both Carson City and Las Vegas. Protesters hoped to convince Congress to suspend today’s official count of the electoral votes. Fortunately for Nevadans, the rallies remained peaceful.

Some Washington lawmakers and media personalities claimed that President Trump incited the event in statements made over the hotly contested election. Others stated that President Trump did not advocate violence and urged protesters to avoid using violence.

It appears that the only thing Americans can agree on is the fact that our country is divided. Several Fallon residents were willing to share their thoughts and insights on the events of the day.

“I don’t understand why hate on both sides is being manifested into such a mess.” – Will Shamberger.

“It is never appropriate to force one’s opinion onto another. If we are to heal, we need to work together. It is sad we have come this far.” – Steve Russell

“I think yesterday’s violence is the natural result of our leaders and media outlets playing games fueled by lies, about election fraud and much else. Our leaders need to find some integrity — some humility and moral courage would help, too — and learn to work together for the good of this country. I am praying that yesterday left them shaken up enough to do some good. I yearn for a way to help Americans discern truth from falsehood, too. Transparency from our lawmakers would help that, too, I think...like, for Trump to come right out and say ‘Human trafficking of all kinds is horrible, and I am working hard with experts to fight it. But no, I am not working to defeat a secret cabal of Democrat Satan worshippers addicted to adrenochrome, because I have no information that such a thing is real.’ – Dawn Blundell

“It’s heartbreaking. This is NOT the United States that I love that I spent my entire career working for, the country that I took an oath to support and defend. These protestors are acting like they live in a third world country having a revolution. The world is watching with ridicule - and probably feeling that this great country, this great experiment of democracy, is failing. We CANNOT fail - our forefathers  believed in democracy and did their best to draft legislation to encourage its future. On another note, Vice-President Pence impressed me this morning, both with his letter to Congress and his actions on the floor. That, sir, was the right thing to do, and the actions of a graceful loser. God bless America. We need it.” – Wendy Matuszak

“Propaganda media will falsely blame the violence on Donald Trump supporters and freedom-loving Patriots. Do not be fooled. The violence will be the actions of Antifa, BLM, and similar communist groups. Lock them all up. They had their lawlessness fun. Now Rule of Law takes over. Trump will be President. It’s happening right now. Get ready military under the guise of riot control.” –Montana Werle

“Take a look at the photo of the Lincoln Memorial from a BLM protest in June. A statue got more serious protection than both houses of Congress and the VP. The contrast in security speaks volumes about the state of America.” – Justin Sielsch
