Captain’s log... January 8th
I have no profound thoughts this morning as I sit in shock having watched the awful events in Washington D.C. Wednesday. Profundity has fled along with the rage, abhorrence, and disbelief, that ran through me. It has been replaced with a dull numbness and a slow, creeping, overwhelming feeling of sadness.
I cannot watch the news, let alone talk about it.
I’m scared to try to report it.
Now more than ever we need an honest, honorable media. As a consumer of news, with all the various outlets available to us with often conflicting messages, how can we be sure what we are being fed is accurate and complete?
As a provider of news how can I, and our little team do the amount of work it takes to provide all the information, from every angle, that our community needs? Information on which a well-informed public must be able to rely. It is a daunting task, and we are up to it, but I’m going to need a minute to get my second wind. This past year has taken the collective starch out of all of us.
I’m grateful that our focus is hyper-local. Especially after yesterday. It is plenty to keep us busy.
Today I’m going to fly my American flag and think of all the good in the country. I’m going to drive around and find my neighbor’s American flags and take pictures of them. If you’re reading this and have a minute, take a picture of yours or your neighbor’s and send them to me at the paper [email protected] or post them on our Facebook page.
Let’s focus on the good like we always do in Fallon, and do what we can to go forward with feelings of optimism and stubborn believe in each other.
Keeping you posted,
Rachel
