Have you ever watched the smile on a child's face as they open up a new book, and that book is theirs? Well, United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierras (UWNNS) staff members got to experience just that. On December 17th, 4,800 books were delivered to Churchill County School District students at Northside Early Learning Center (NELC/Prekindergarten), Lahontan Elementary School (LES/kindergarten and 1st grades), and E.C. Best Elementary (ECB, 2nd and 3rd grades).
CCSD Superintendent Summer Stephens was excited to welcome this project into the district. "The amazing amount of books made available to our Pre-K 3 year-olds through 3rd graders is so unbelievable," Stephens said, "It will certainly bring joy and a love of reading to our children."
These deliveries put new books in the hands of over 1,000 students just in time for Christmas and winter break. Each student received a bag with three to five books. Michael Brazier, President and CEO of UWNNS proudly stated, "We are excited to be able to partner with Churchill County School District to encourage reading over the winter break.:
Ashley Cabrera, Director of Marketing and Engagement for UWNNS said, "It takes the entire community working together to support our young readers. And that support was found in corporate partners like NV Energy, Kennamental, New Millennium, Washington Federal, and Better World Book."
It's hard to say who was more excited, UWNNS, or the students. "It was so great to see the enthusiasm in the students' faces," said Brazier after delivering to second and third graders at E.C. Best. "'Do I really get to keep these books?' one student asked. We told them all five books were for them to keep and take home!"
As students left for the winter break, bags of new books that now belonged to them were happily carried home to be shared with family and friends.
