Obituary - Michael Thomas Blunk

Michael Thomas Blunk, husband, father and grandfather passed from this world on November 13, 2020
in Reno, Nv. 

He was born September 23, 1956, in Alameda, California to Edwin and Roberta Blunk. He was a “Navy
Brat” living in San Diego, California till 7 years old and then in Thurso, Scotland coming back to the
The United States when he was 12. Mike graduated from Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles,
Washington in 1974. Mike joined the U.S. Navy in 1975 and devoted 21 years to serving his country
before retiring in 1996. 

Upon his retirement, he decided he wanted to be a secondary teacher so he enrolled at the University
of Nevada, Reno where he received his Bachelors and Masters in Education. He taught school at Silver
Stage Middle School in Silver Springs from 2004-2011, went to Elko to the California Trail Interpretive
Center as an educational specialist from March 2012 - July 2013. In 2013 he went to Las Vegas to teach
history and U.S. Government at Silver Ridge High School. 

In 2014 he went to Round Mountain, Nv. And taught history, social studies, U.S. Government, and even
a little German to the students who wanted to learn. While in Round Mountain Mike served as the High
school football coach, as well as teaching until illness forced him to retire in 2017. It was his dream job,
as he enjoyed the solitude of the mountains and the closeness of the small community. 

He is survived by his wife Roberta Denshire of Fallon, daughters Heather and Chelsea Blunk of Oak
Harbor, Wa. , son Cory Blunk of Bellingham, Wa., stepsons Nathan (Mary Lu) and Aaron Denshire of
Fallon, stepdaughter Layla Duncan of Fallon, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren with an 8th one to
arrive in February. He touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.

Interment will take place in the summer of 2021 at The Veterans Cemetery in Fernley

Mike was an excellent teacher and a good friend. He is greatly missed by his students and colleagues. He was one of the best. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Mike’s retirement left a big hole in the hearts of RM kids. I never saw anyone try so hard to keep teaching through his illness. He loved and accepted all kids, and he was a true patriot who inspired a love of country in his students. We miss your family & send hugs!

Roberta and Family, I am so saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. I enjoyed working with him at RMHS and appreciated him while he coached football and Brian. He left a lasting impression and will never be forgotten. May you cherish your memories and hold him close. My sincere condolences to you all.
