On Sunday, November 22, Monty Charles Williams passed away at Renown Regional Medical Hospital.
Monty was born in Yuba City, California on April 3, 1960 and lived in Ruby Valley, Nevada before his family moved to and made their home in Fallon, Nevada. He is the son of the late Gordon and Elizabeth Moon Williams and the brother of the late Elizabeth “Libby” Austin. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Williams, son, Gordon Williams, his two nieces, Shawnee Lee and Charlize Lee, sister, Dee Dee Ramirez, many nieces and nephews, and many, many other family members and friends.
He enlisted in the US Marines Corps in 1981 and served as an M60 machine gunner. He served in Okinawa, Japan. He was discharged in 1983.
Monty was a Nevada Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and was working for the New Frontier Treatment Center in Fallon at the time of his death. Previously, he worked as the Executive Director for the Statewide Native American Coalition at the ITCN in Reno.
Monty married the love of his life Sandra Gibbons in Carson City, Nevada in 2009. They lived in Carson City for a short period of time before moving back to his home in Fallon. They traveled to many powwows throughout the years. Monty was a champion Northern Traditional dancer and Southern Straight dancer, he was also a Gourd dancer, being a Headsman for the Silver State Gourd Society. He also was an MC and Arena Director at several powwows.
Three of Monty’s greatest accomplishments in his life were becoming a father to his son, Gordon, his 31 years of sobriety, and being a state Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Monty worked with the Tribes in Nevada to teach the dangers of drugs and alcohol and to empower them to overcome the effects of multi-generational addiction and work collaboratively to address the risk factors damaging communities. He especially enjoyed working with youth, and planning community events and conferences.
A memorial service for Monty will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home, Fallon, Nevada.
