An institution of television, Saturday Night Live is now in its 46th year.
Last season, due to the quickly changing Coronavirus precautions, the show ended early with two virtually filmed episodes. As multiple networks and production companies are beginning to find ways to create content safely, Saturday Night Live did the same.
We are three episodes into the new seasons, with hosts including Chris Rock, Bill Burr, and Issa Rae.
This Saturday, first-time host Adele will be taking the reins for the weekend.
In previous election years, SNL has brought their A game. Fantastic candidate impressions, and hilarious debate parodies usually fill the months leading up to November 3rd.
The beginning of this season turned a corner down a dark alley I am not so sure they know how to get out of.
Assumingly, having Jim Carrey and Maya Rudolph in your arsenal would make any episode great. However, the presidential coverage is not what’s weakened. The rest of the sketches have.
With new streaming platforms and younger creators, it feels like SNL is attempting to be noticed as a ‘counterculture’ program like they were 46 years ago. Lest they forget, they became the institution.
I am always interested in the strange and unconventional humor, but when it is trying too hard it simply becomes strange and unconventional nonsense.
I hope the new cast find their rhythm this weekend with an exciting host like Adele.
