Middle School Student Killed at Bus Stop

Middle School Student Killed at Bus Stop
A Churchill County Middle School student was hit and killed waiting at the bus stop.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a Friday morning crash that killed a Churchill County Middle School student shortly before noon.

The NHP said a teal GMC was heading westbound on Rice Road, but for some unknown reason, the driver veered into the eastbound lane and then onto the shoulder, where the truck hit the student. The accident happened just before the intersection with Carson River Road, on the west end of Rice Road. The student was pronounced deceased at the scene. NHP said the student was waiting for a school bus.

The NHP preliminary report said the driver remained on the scene. Because the student is a juvenile, the NHP will not release a name. The Churchill County School District said the student attended the afternoon session. CCSD also said no school district vehicle was involved.

The Churchill County Sheriff's Office pronounced the student dead. The Nevada Highway Patrol and their Major Accifent Investigations Team responded to conduct the traffic investigation.

“We are profoundly saddened for the families involved in the accident and extend our deepest condolences,” Summer Stephens, supertendent of the school district, said.

The NHP said witnesses can email [email protected]with any information on the crash.
