Faith and Life -- a new column from local faith leaders

Once per month or so, Fallon’s faith leaders offer their thoughts on faith and life. Any church or faith community of any kind is welcome and encouraged to participate. We have room for just a few in each column, and so we will publish in a rotation. If you have ideas for topics we should write about, or if you are a faith leader and would like to participate, please call Pastor Dawn Blundell at Epworth UMC, 775-423-4714. This week is part 3 of a 3-part series on Race in America.

As we live between the perfect world God designed for us in the first place, and the new perfect world God intends for us – the one where no one hurts or destroys, where lions and lambs and wolves and children lie down in peace together, where we are surrounded by beauty and love and truth, where everyone has everything they could possibly need and more (Isaiah 11:6-9, Revelation 21 & 22) -- we have a lot to learn. So right now, we live both humbly and boldly: humbly enough to listen carefully to and learn from our Black and brown siblings who cry out for help and justice, and boldly enough to do and say what is right even when it is difficult.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” These words from the Bible strongly relate to the matter at hand. Humility first allows us to see that God has created all races, not just ours, in His own image, which means no race is superior to another. Second, humility makes us see that we have likely contributed to the problem, no matter our skin color. Third, humility causes those who have found peace with God by his grace, through faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection, to realize that they couldn’t have produced such peace on their own. Nor, can such incapable people bring truly lasting peace to racial tensions apart from Jesus. So please Lord, use us to bring true peace.

On-site worship services Sunday mornings at 8:30am and 10:15am

Biblically speaking, there is only one race -- the human race. Within that race, there are only two kinds of people: those who trust in the grace of God in Christ, and those who need to do so. Due to our sin, every one of us would be condemned before God if it were not for Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. When we come to him in faith, we discover the compelling truth that Christ unites people of every tribe, tongue, and people, so there are no further grounds for relating to one another according to ethnicity or skin color.

In these days when we are restricted in where we can go, what we can do, who we can meet with, we should focus more on being true followers of Christ. We are all brothers and sisters, each of us the child of a loving Father in Heaven. His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, invites all to come unto Him. We are all in the same battle against Satan and his evil plan.

An ancient military commander who lived during the first century BC, lifted his, “Title of Liberty” as a call of arms for his people to defend their religion, family, their peace, freedom, and country. We all must individually do what is most important in this battle against the Adversary. We must love and respect our brothers and sisters while fighting against evil.
