City Promotes “White Out” for Elko Games

By Rachel Dahl —  The Fallon Greenwave basketball teams face Elko this Friday, and the City of Fallon is encouraging the entire community to attend and watch their games. Mayor Tedford is giving away 700 white Greenwave t-shirts at City Hall this week and anyone wearing one at the games Friday will get a free ticket for a raffle prize basket. There are two raffle prizes - one for the general public and one specifically for students. “The City is always interested in supporting high school sports and we are super excited about supporting these white out games Friday between Fallon and Elko, said Tedford. “We need to pack the gym — Go Greenwave — beat Elko!” The varsity girls team, defending state champion with a 12-0 record and coached by Anne Smith, plays at 6:00 p.m. in the main gym. Smith and her team are looking forward to taking on Elko on the home court and she is excited about the support of the City. “Any time the city gets involved you know it’s always going to be an exceptional event,” said Smith. “They do a phenomenal job - not only for CCHS, but any organization. Mayor Tedford goes all out and it will be a great atmosphere for the athletes to perform.” Smith said she knows many athletes who never get the opportunity to compete with this kind of support - a packed gym, and banners coming down the road. “It just makes you really proud to live and coach in a community like this.” Coached by Chelle Dalager, the varsity boys, with an 11-1 record in league games, play at 7:30 p.m. Dalager says this team has played together in some way or another since third grade. “When you have a group that gets along like this, it’s fun,” she said. “This team chemistry and how hard they’ll work for each other is pretty incredible, that’s what we’re experiencing right now.” The boys also boast a team GPA of 3.76. “That’s really impressive,” said Dalager, “it sends a good message to the younger kids that academics are really important, being a good citizen is really important.” With the support of the City and the community this game is shaping up to be a night to remember. “I always tell my girls when we huddle up,” said Smith, “take a minute to look around. Smell this gym, think about this, feel the energy in here. Some of you when you step off this court will never get to experience that again — the community support like this, when you have this many people cheering for you — this is a very special place to grow up.”
