Cocktail Napkin – New Normal or Not?

By Jo Petteruti, Mixologist and Owner, Jo's Stillwater Tea Room

Welcome back!  Are we there yet?  Can we get there?  Will we ever get back to where we were before the COVID-19 virus put our lives on hold for 11 weeks?

There's no doubt that things have changed.  Some changes may be temporary but others may become permanent and we may not know which ones will remain until those changes just don't go away.  A conversation over a cocktail with friends may help you ponder the answers to what the new normal is and what may still be the same.

Cocktails have a way of sparking conversations, and we now have no shortage of topics.  Support your local businesses and their reopening efforts.  Visit your favorite places and enjoy conversations and cocktails with others again.

The art of conversation is actually becoming a lost skill.  It's too easy these days to just text one another.  Conversation is defined as the general course of actions or habits, the manner of conducting oneself in the world.  By definition, it requires an informal interchange of thoughts and sentiments via spoken words - not electronic ones.  We did not activate the WiFi service at the Tea Room during the first few years that we were open for the very reason that we wanted to cultivate an environment where people would talk to each other – and it seems to have worked.

So, our old normal of visiting with friends and discussing the topic of the day over a cocktail really hasn't changed.  But some of the ways our businesses are providing a place for those conversations for us has changed.

Sometimes change can be a good thing.  So for a change, today's column will feature recipes that my bartenders have crafted.  It's a joy having Mark Venturacci and Daniel Hilliker helping out at the Tea Room.  They are both dedicated, creative and hard-working, all while being conversation-enablers at the same time!  I hope you enjoy Marco's Green Tea and Daniel's Biplane.  Both will spark a little conversation.

Marco's Green Tea Ingredients:

  • ½ oz. Jameson Whiskey
  • ½ oz. Peach Schnapps
  • ½ oz. Triple Sec
  • Fresh lemon for garnish - optional

Preparation:

  • Add a scoop of ice to a cocktail shaker, then add the liquid ingredients.
  • Cover and shake until icy cold.
  • Strain the shaker's ingredients into a 2 oz. shot glass and garnish with a small lemon slice.

Daniel's Biplane Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz. Frey Bourbon
  • 1 oz. Aperol
  • ½ oz. Amaretto
  • ½ oz. Lemon Juice
  • ½ oz. Simple Syrup
  • Fresh lemon for garnish

Preparation:

  • Chill a coupe or martini glass.
  • Add a scoop of ice to a cocktail shaker, then add the liquid ingredients.
  • Cover and shake until icy cold.
  • Double-strain the shaker's ingredients into the chilled glass and garnish with a lemon slice.

Sip and enjoy them both responsibly... Ciao!
