Fallon, Nev. -- The Churchill County High School class of 2020 has had a year to remember. In spite of the disruption caused by the coronavirus, these students have worked hard and are heading off into the world with unique memories unlike any other class in recent history.
The Churchill County School District will hold a Drive-Through Commencement Ceremony for the senior class on their regularly scheduled graduation day, May 29th, with some concessions to the coronavirus shutdowns still in place by Governor Sisolak.
Beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the 29th, graduates and their families (no more than 10 in the vehicle), will drive a route behind the baseball field to the south end of the football field, where the graduate will exit the car, cross the stage, have their name announced, be handed a diploma cover, and switch their tassel. They will then get back into their car and exit the property. Beginning at 5:30 PM, KVLV will be broadcasting the recorded student "shout-outs" and Valedictorian speeches on the radio.
This ceremony is closed to the public as per the state's health mandates, but community members can tune in to the radio to hear the celebration.
Seniors have been invited to decorate their cars and (for this year only) their caps. They will be able to pick up their caps, gowns, and any honor stoles or cord at the high school on Tuesday, May 26 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Jostens is still taking orders via phone or online for those who haven't yet ordered, and they will mail the regalia directly to the student. Graduates will receive their diplomas on Friday night, once they've crossed the stage.
Additionally, the district will have a photographer on hand to take official photos and each graduate will receive one free photo. Also, the ceremony will be recorded and posted to the district webpage for those who are not able to see the live stream.
