Local 4-H Livestock Show Goes Virtual This Year

The 81 year tradition of the Churchill County Jr. Livestock Show & Sale will happen this year in the form of a Virtual Livestock Show & Sale. This year's show will look a little different thanks to social distancing guidelines due to COVID-19, and presents a unique situation for the 4-H members who have put a lot of time, labor, & love into raising their animals.

Leaders have held several meetings and discussions trying to decide how to give the kids an outlet for the work they have put in with their animals, working to get them ready to go market.

Instead of showing their animals in the ring at the Churchill County Fairgrounds as they have for the past 80 years, kids this year will film their animals at home, submit that video to online judges, and then await the results.

It's a different approach, but one that is unfortunately needed during the social distancing era.

All of the 4-H participants, leaders included, are disappointed the members won't experience firsthand the community and camaraderie that the Livestock Show traditionally brings, but the switch to a virtual show won't detract the kids from why they raise animals in the first place. Raising animals in general, and for the Livestock Show specifically, teaches them about hard work, about being responsible, about time management. It teaches them how to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat; life lessons they won't forget, and for which they'll always be thankful.
