On Saturday, January 25th, I had the opportunity to meet Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles. The band consists of guitarist and lead singer Sarah Borges, Alex on the guitar, Binky on the bass, and drummer Nate. The group traveled all the way from Boston to the Churchill Arts Council here in town in order to perform. As soon as they walked through the doors for the meet and greet, the band immediately started shaking hands and memorizing names. When everyone was acquainted, Sarah Borges, who is a musician as well as an accomplished children’s book author, took a guitar and gave us an acoustic set.
This is where you were able to hear the strength in Borges’ voice. There was a modern blend of rock, country, and folk styles in her music. The sound of the guitars mixed with Borges’ vocals and Binky harmonizing from the back of the room created an atmospheric bubble that was impossible to escape. The rhythm demanded you bob your head to the tempo, forced you to finger drum along on the table, and expected your foot to be tapping.
Later that night, when the actual concert started, the band exceeded my predetermined high expectations. Borges and Binky immediately set up a chemistry with the crowd through their on-stage banter. When the music started, the whole house was shaking with excitement, fans were calling out onto the stage, and everyone was having a good time. The best part of the show was undoubtedly when the band had a callback portion of the show and the entire crowd was singing in unison. No one left the building without a tune stuck in their head.
Make sure you check out Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles on all streaming platforms and buy their last album Love’s Middle Name. Sarah Borges, you and the Broken Singles are welcomed back to Fallon anytime.
