Don’t do this diet. I'm not a doctor, just a guy who studies nutrition and does extreme dieting for the health benefits. At one point I weighed 300 pounds. I'm a healthy 195 now and as of 72 hours ago I was a Vegan.
And now I eat meat. I started this diet with the intent to eliminate junk food so I can identify the ingredients that have been hurting my gut. I'm hoping it's the erythritol, an artificial sweetener. I'm worried its added sugar and spirits and beer.
This is a strict version of the carnivore diet – no processed meat. Just beef that is grass fed, and grain finished. Steak, tallow, salt, and water. I take a vitamin D supplement because it is winter time, not as much sun. I cook my steaks as rare as possible for potassium. At the end of the day I soak my feet in Epsom salts to absorb magnesium through my skin.
Steak, by itself, has too much protein, so I add tallow, rendered beef fat. It is by far the worst part of this diet, but to keep my fat ratio near or above 70% of my daily calories, I add 1 to 4 tablespoons of it to my steaks. It would not be a good idea to be on this diet for too long.
Besides that, the cost of meat is ridiculous compared to plants. If I have to eat meat for a few months I'll be heading to Hecks Meat to buy a quarter beef.
Sensible dieters don’t have to worry about their macronutrient ratios; the percentage of protein, fat, and carbohydrates we eat. It's when you restrict one macronutrient down to extreme levels that you should worry about the other two. High protein can harm the kidneys and can stop ketosis. High fat intake (above your weight maintenance) can cause fatty liver, obesity, atherosclerosis. High carbohydrate intake (again above your weight maintenance) can cause all the same problems of high fat intake.
The easy way to get around this problem is to watch how many calories you eat. The harder way is to make most of the fiber in your carbs. On a vegan diet you just have to keep the junk food to a minimum.
I'm having blood work done and will keep my doctor informed if anything goes wrong.
If you do actually be considering trying this crazy diet – do your homework, and carefully consider the quality of the meat you put in your body.
So far it's only been a few days, but the results are real. I wake up easily, have no digestive problems, and I'm never hungry. I have to force myself to eat 2.5 pounds of meat a day. I have two jobs and work out at least 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. If I weren’t so active, burning calories all day, I would eat a lot less meat. This diet has inspired me to try new ways of eating plants, but mainly because I miss blueberries and broccoli — which I'm still convinced everyone should eat more of if they can. The only other diet advice that works for everyone is – drink more water.
