The Community Partnership meeting was held recently with the following information presented by various members of the group.
Jaime Shafer, the art teacher at Churchill County High School made a presentation about the “Why You Matter” program that she is implementing at the high school and eventually to the middle school. She has been working to promote the program throughout the summer and will continue to promote the program throughout the community. The program will culminate in March with national motivational speaker, Mike Smith, coming to make several presentations.
Kathy Yates made a presentation about the Truckee Meadows Community College program “Veterans Upward Bound” designed to support veterans with education.
There was a presentation about the Wishing Tree. Applications have been down this year and are due October 18th. The goal this year is for more for clothing and shoes, not so much on toys. If anyone knows of children who may qualify, they are asked to send that information to the Social Services office.
A report was made on the efforts at CCHS to work toward increasing career and work-based experiences for juniors and seniors.
Highland Manor held a yard sale and will use the funds to help pay for activities. They will also be having a Christmas tree for residents without family in the area or who struggle with low income.
The Churchill Coalition will be holding a golf tournament with more details to come. The family parenting class is now open to 30 students and has gone very well.
A report was made about the 26 acres purchased by the County on Coleman Road for low income housing. The work has begun on plans as to how and what will be involved. There has also been a private developer purchase a large property in Hazen (and he will be developing that as an industrial park. The Community Partnership is a group of agencies and organization that work to improve the quality of life for Churchill County residents. The group is administered by the Social Services office.
