The Bert Miller 5K Fire Run/Walk was held on July 13th, 2019 to honor Miller, who was killed a year ago. The run began at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints building that he attended for his final time on July 22, 2018.
The American flag was raised high in the air at the end of one of the Fallon Churchill Fire Ladder Trucks and the breeze slightly helped it waive to during the ceremony on a beautiful summer morning.
The ceremony started with a Pledge, National Anthem and Prayer, and was followed by remarks from Bishop Nathan Dahl and Chief Dooley of the Fallon Fire Deptartment.
The City of Fallon had T-shirts and the winning medallions made and they provided shade tents and water along the route. Refreshments along the route were provided by the Relief Society of the church.
As the runners began to come into sight, we at the finish line were cheering them on and the spirit of the sacrifice was felt by all. What a great day, as the family kept time for the runners, and Miller's wife, LuDene, kept the record of the runners crossing the finish line. She and her daughter, Heidi and son, Michael awarded the top three winners in each age bracket.
It was a bonding and wonderful morning felt by all, and when Nathan Dahl came in with the final participants, pushing the baby stroller across the finish line for the second time, the crowd cheered and a group photo was taken of a great group of friends and family.
On Wednesday, July 31, the Family of Bert Miller presented the Fallon Churchill Fire Department a check from the 1st Annual 5K in the amount of $2,365 on behalf of their husband and father who served our community for over 35 years.
