Funds available to serve hungry and homeless

Funds available to serve hungry and homeless
Submitted courtesy of the United Way -- United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra announces that the Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA has awarded $276,840.00 in federal funds, for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, to jurisdictions in Northern Nevada. Public and private organizations may apply for federal funds for supplemental funding of programs helping individuals facing economic emergencies through food, shelter, and rent and utilities assistance. United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) serves as the secretariat for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) in northern Nevada. This year, UWNNS will work with local boards to ensure that federal funds are allocated in the following jurisdictions: Lyon County at $28,659; Washoe County at $214,337; and the State Set-Aside Committee, NV at $33,844. These funds are distributed to agencies that serve some of the neediest in each community. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Funds are available to private nonprofit or governmental agencies in Carson City, Churchill, Elko, Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, Washoe, and White Pine counties. Agencies that meet EFSP guidelines for Phase 36 serving hungry and homeless people may apply for funding. The application materials and instructions are located at www.uwnns.org. Legal ads have been placed in regional newspapers to reach out to agencies that can meet the specific requirements for EFSP Phase 36. Ads included the jurisdiction being funded, the source of the funding, the award amount in the jurisdiction, eligible agencies, contact information for application, and deadline for applying. The source of funding is a federal appropriation from Congress to the EFSP National Board Program. The National Board selects the jurisdiction (counties) for funding, not specific agencies. The federal department responsible for this program is the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These are not state/county government or United Way funds. Since 1983, in its 35-year history, the EFSP will have distributed $4.4 billion to over 14,000 human service agencies in more than 2,500 communities across the country through this collaborative effort between the private and public sectors. For questions or assistance, contact Kelly Stevens or Kim Spiersch at 775-322-8668. All applications must be received by Noon on July 8, 2019 at the United Way office located at 639 Isbell Road, Suite 460, Reno, NV 89509. Incomplete, late or faxed applications will not be accepted.
