Because the National Day of Service, September 11, falls on a Monday this year, organizers are planning for Saturday, September 9, as the actual workday.
The community service project will move the frisbee course from the fairgrounds to Liberty Pond Park. Anyone interested in participating should meet at 3 p.m. at Liberty Pond.
Congress adopted the National Day of Service in 2009 to allow Americans to observe and remember the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by engaging in charitable service, making 9/11 Day the most significant annual day of service in the United States. The 9/11 Day of Service asks us nationwide to do some small charitable service, transforming a day of heartbreak into experiencing the joy of helping others.
Suppose you are not inclined to participate in the community service project. In that case, organizers encourage community members to find a project of their own or to go to the
JustServe.org website, where there is a listing of community service projects that all need participation.
The National Day of Service is observed along with the Global Youth Service Day held every April. This year, local youth helped deliver sandbags to older adults who lived in the flood plain.
