Gwen Holmes

It’s not the length of life, but the depth of life. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma, gaga, and friend, Gwendolyn (Gwen) Holmes, 76, of Fallon, Nevada, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Monday, July 10, 2023, in Reno Nevada.

She will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 59 years Richard (Dick); her sons Bruce (Miranda) Holmes and Brett (Tammie) Holmes; her daughter Lisa (Mike) Harris; grandchildren Casey (Haley) Pinkston, Kyle Pinkston, Nicholas Holmes, and Alysa Holmes; great-grandchildren Devyn and Hudson Pinkston; several nieces and nephews; an abundance of close friends, and her fur baby, Sophie.

Gwen was born July 16, 1946, in Payson, Utah to Donald A. and Utahna Zellar. The family lived in Montello and Wells, Nevada, finally settling in Lovelock, Nevada. She graduated from Pershing County High School in 1964. During her time in Lovelock, she met the love of her life, Dick, and made many lifelong friends.

The family moved to Sparks, Nevada in 1968. Gwen enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom taking care of her family. She later worked in the banking industry until her retirement.

An avid homemaker and baker, she enjoyed gardening, entertaining, getting together with friends, and any activity that involved spending time with her family. In addition to her coveted cookie recipes, she leaves her family and friends with cherished memories and lessons in love that will be carried forward through future generations.

Although she experienced physical pain and limitations, she managed them with dignity and grace; always living her life to the fullest.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents and sister Madge Daz.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 150 Burks Blvd., Reno, Nevada, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gwen’s memory to your favorite charity.

I remember doing live interviews on KVLV when I sang with the Lahontan Valley Concert Choir and wanted to get the word out to the public on our performances in the valley. Since 1972, Mike and Dee have been among my most treasured friends. I will certainly miss him knowing he isn't there anymore.Comment publication date: 2/16/25, 8:34 AMComment source: Obituary - Joseph Marvin “Mike” McGinnessComment author: KelliComment text: I'd use firm. Press it for a bit (drain and put a plate on top) to squeeze out some of the moisture. Then crumble it up and add instead of the chorizo.Comment publication date: 2/15/25, 12:34 PMComment source: What’s Cooking in Kelli’s Kitchen - Cheesy Green Chile Bean BakeComment author: James SmackComment text: Sorry to hear about Mike, and thank you for sharing your memories. Dean had me dive a four up on the September train that same year. In 1981 I spent a week working as a swing outrider when he ran his famous 20 up in the Carson City parade. He taught me how to hitch and drive multiple teams. We had a great relationship and never a crossword. I will always appreciate his patience and great sense of humor.
