Allison's Book Report — Top 5 Summer Reads

Allison's Book Report — Top 5 Summer Reads

Author: File Photo

This week, we are going camping. When I say camping, I mean my family does traditional, outdoorsy stuff while I read books in the outdoors, sometimes with junk food and/or adult beverages. My biggest concern while camping is always, “Did I bring enough books?”

Lucky for me, the last couple of months have been very kind to readers. There is no shortage of juicy new books, out just in time for me to haul them all over creation in my camper like it is my own private Bookmobile. Sounds awesome, right?

Well, luckily for you, I am sharing the ones that I'm most excited to read. In no particular order, Allison the Reader presents: The Top Five Books She Can’t Wait to Read This Summer.

#1. “The Whispers” by Ashley Audrain. A well-to-do neighborhood is shaken to its core when a child falls from his bedside window in the night. Told over the course of a tense three days, the women in the neighborhood grapple with what has happened and what role each of them has played. I loved Audrain's debut “The Push,” a super suspenseful thriller about motherhood, so I can't wait to see what her sophomore novel has to offer.

#2. “Lady Tan's Circle of Women” by Lisa See. A story of friendship between two young women learning about women's health and midwifery in China in the late 1400s. When one of the girls is sent into an arranged marriage, she is expected to follow the strict rules of her mother-in-law, including the prohibition of her practicing medicine. At its heart, this work of historical fiction is a story about women helping women. Lisa See is a wonderful storyteller and this book looks like just the sprawling saga that she is famous for.

#3. “The Celebrants” by Steven Rowley. This one has been described as “a Big Chill of our times" which already has my interest peaked. The story is of a reunion of college friends twenty-eight years after their graduation, and the growing pains faced as they become actual adults. Steven Rowley is truly one of my very favorite authors. He writes about growing up, loss, grief, and love with such reverence, heart, and humor that I will read anything he offers up forever.

#4. “The True Love Experiment” by Christina Lauren. A romance novelist and a documentary filmmaker team up to craft the perfect Hollywood love story but their chemistry threatens to derail the whole project. It is sure to be everything we love from rom-com powerhouse, Christina Lauren, the pen name for a pair of besties and writing partners with an uncanny knack for writing steamy love stories that make me laugh out loud every single time.

#5. “The Society of Shame” by Jane Roper. Kathleen Held's whole life is turned upside-down when she arrives home to find her garage on fire and her husband, who happens to be running for the U.S. Senate, on the lawn in his underwear. Then scandal erupts, not at the discovery of her husband's embarrassing affair, but because a photo is taken of Kathleen at the scene with a period stain on her pants. I am interested in this look at social media and what it is like to accidentally fall into the world of an instant and very reluctant celebrity. This one just looks so creative and interesting, sure to provide much food for thought for its readers.

I hope you go grab one of these books this week. Don't forget to pop over to my Instagram, @allison.the.reader for more of my readings and ramblings about all things bookish, including these books and all of the others that I'm loading up to take camping with me.

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
