Obituary -- Robert Craig Martin

Obituary -- Robert Craig Martin
Bob Martin

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Robert Craig Martin on October 15, 2022.

Bobby was born December 16, 1960, in Fallon, NV, to Charles Robert (Bob) Martin and Jill Brenda Marie Edmonds (from Kingston on the Surrey, England). Bobby was raised in Fallon and Carson City by Bob and Marilyn Martin attending elementary school in Fallon and graduating from Carson City High School in 1979.  After trying his hand at underground mining and working ski lifts at Mammoth and Steamboat Springs, Bobby announced to his father he was going to hunt and fish for a living. Being told by his father he was about 150 years too late, Bobby set out on a quest to prove him wrong. He attended a hunting guide school in Hamilton, Montana, eventually purchasing the first guide camp he worked for. North Park Outfitters out of Walden, Colorado, became a brotherhood of guides and return elk hunters for over 35 years.

In the mid 1980s, with his summers free, Bobby headed to Alaska to try his hand at commercial fishing. Bobby started at the very bottom of the industry working the slime line and within a short amount of time, he purchased his first commercial boat the Argonaut, and then the larger vessel, the Soulmate fishing for cod and salmon.

Bobby died while hunting deer in the remote mountains of Northern Nevada with his rifle and his beloved dog, Aila, at his side.  A true mountain man right to the end. A role model, a mentor, and a best friend like no other. Nothing but positivity and support from him was the norm. Many considered him a best friend, that was how great he was, touching the lives of those who knew him in the best possible way. He eschewed the ‘standard’ way of living and created a life based on hunting, fishing, trapping, and skiing.

Loving Bobby before they passed were his mother, Jill Edmonds Martin Neil; grandparents Charley Van & Luna Mae (Preston) Martin; Uncle William (Bill) Martin, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Bobby will always and forever be in the hearts of his father Charles R. Martin & his wife Michelle; Mom Marilyn Martin Stix; Uncle Mike Martin (Cathy Woolsey); step-sisters Jennifer Penny (Jackie), Natalie Miller (Rich), Laura Harper (Ladonte), and many cousins and friends who looked up to and admired him.

“Not a sunrise or sunset in the mountains and on the water will go by without a nod and a toast to this great man…our fearless leader of NPO ‘Balls Out Boulder Bustin’ Bob Martin.”

Memorial Day Weekend 2023, Bobby’s name will be added to the Kodiak Fisherman’s Memorial at which time his name will be read and the bell will be rung.   A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Please consider donating to St Jude’s, a charity Bobby fervently supported.

So sad to learn of his passing. I did admire him greatly. Our common interests were our dogs. The last and the current. Healing wishes for his family. And Bob, say Hi to my Sheba in the sky, for surely your last dog has buddied up with her as Rose and Aila. God bless you Bob. RIP

From Kenai to Steamboat to Walden to Tahoe to Kodiak to the Nevada mountains I was lucky enough to share time and adventures with Bob. He inspired me constantly to live life how I saw fit and not be afraid to take a chance, envisioning the dreams and making them happen. I feel extremely blessed to have had such a friendship in my life for so many crucial years. It’s a rare thing to have such a friendship. My sympathy and love go out to his family and friends far and wide. I know this farewell is tough for all. Big hugs to all who loved him.

I was so very sad when I heard the news —- way too great of a person to be gone! I met him in Spanish class in CCHS when he and I had just moved to CC - he sat behind me and poked me with his pencil for a semester. We became close and spent a summer together when I babysat the Brewer kids across the street from him. He helps makes my memories of high school happy ones. Even when he got popular he never changed how he talked to people. He was just a super nice guy. And those parties he and John threw! I tracked him down 20 years ago through a random mention in a website and he called me like we’d just seen each at school. Although we talked on the phone less than 10 times in the past 20 years we always picked up where we left off like it was just the day before. I have always loved him. He was one of a kind. I'm terribly sorry for the huge loss of Bob for his family and friends. He sure loved his Dad and Marilyn!

Bobby graduated 1978. I was his biology partner in high school, and we walked together for graduation. I will always love and miss him as will so many other people that were fortunate enough to know him. My heart is broken. He called me Bosty Mistwick.

Oh we are bummed we got the graduation date wrong. Thank you for sharing such a sweet story on Bobby. He will be missed terribly.

I met Bob cod fishing in Kodiak jigging for Pacific cod in the year 2002. He excelled at it and was a mentor of mine as well in that extremely physical fishery. I had coffee with him on the Argonaut just two years in Kodiak. I will miss giving him a shout on the VHF on the water. My sincere condolences to his family. Christian Trosvig

I met Bob in Kodiak about 15 years ago. He was one of, if not the best, Cod jiggers in the fleet. One day i was tied up to him and asked him how he catches so much Cod. He was happy to bring me inside, poured some coffee, and show me his charts, and shared some of his knowledge on catching Cod. I use the knowledge i gained from Bob to this day and it has made me a better fisherman. I will never forget his kindness and that genuine, happy smile he wore so often. I will miss being able to run into him on the docks and sharing stories of our catches and misses.

We had so many amazing conversations at the cannery. He was loved by so many in Kodiak and will be missed. May your memories comfort you.

Bob brought his work ethic and principles to Alaska and was well loved and respected along the docks in Kodiak. He was a man of kindness and integrity and will be missed from the mountains to the sea.

Who and what they REALLY were. Because they were devotional and IMPORTANT to the humans they connected with. The content of their life bled so that others could feel their own life’s importance. Teachers of justifiable life and art. That all can absorb and use as the best fertilizer for THEIR lives. Giving the silent secrets and the loud guidance. The Melon Man was a perfect specimen for how to devote. His passing meant a life book of feeling/knowing what gives other humans their paths to Love and Knowledge. Some humans are meant to show others their paths. And in that they secrete ways to profitably exist.Comment publication date: 3/18/26, 4:50 PMComment source: In memorium -- The Melon ManComment author: Pam BitschenauerComment text: Ken, thank you for your kind words about Scott our "Mellon Man". My husband and I used to visit with Scott quite often when we lived in Fallon and then whenever we had the chance to as we passed through town.
