Staff report --
Truckee-Carson Irrigation Districts released the latest water outlook supply last week and according to officials, “the drought is over.” Kelly Herwick is the Water Master at TCID who provided current conditions for the water shed. With the region sitting at 209% snowpack, the soil moisture in the mountains went from record dry to record saturation levels.
Herwick says the precipitation outlook is dry for the next ten days, and the current in-flows to the Lahontan Reservoir are 1,560 cubic feet per second (cfs) and outflows are 1,570 cfs. He is anticipating 1,000 cfs increase in the Carson River flows in the next five days due to increased temperatures throughout the region.
The April through July stream flow 30-year run-off average is 155,000 acre-feet, but this year the run-off is estimated to be 350,000 acre-feet. Herwick anticipates “spread” water for water users will be available through the end of April, and the district will continue to revisit the forecasts to determine whether or not they will continue to engage in flood operations.
